In a surprise move, the Senate voted 234-117 today to rename the United States in an effort to improve its reputation abroad. "It's a branding issue really - we needed something that better reflects our move toward becoming a more socially caring nation," said Senator Wixup (D-NY).
The debate over what exactly to call the US continues though most seem to favor "
American Socialist Republic" (
American Socialist State was rejected, in part, because of objections to the acronym).
Republicans were less enthusiastic about the move, wanting to maintain the notion of our nation being a "republic".
"We can't just ignore our history. This nation was built on the idea of free capital and republican ideals," said Senator Haymaker (R-WY). "Just because those ideas have become outdated doesn't mean we should dismiss them outright."
Conservatives want something "Republican" sounding that keeps the flavor of the original name. Senator Wixup feels a compromise may be possible. "
United States Socialist Republic would seem to be a good choice. And the acronym is currently available."
