Rand Paul must have read my blog...?

Here's a quote from Rand Paul on NBC's Today Show as reported by Deseret News in Salt Lake City (Associated Press story):

Republican Rand Paul, who won a Kentucky Senate seat in a race powered by tea party support, said Americans need not fear gridlock in the next Congress because "debate is healthy."
"It seems like the most fiscally conservative government is always divided government," Paul said on NBC's "Today" show.

Clearly he is reading my blog (see Here's to partisan bickering).

Senate Votes to Rename the United States

In a surprise move, the Senate voted 234-117 today to rename the United States in an effort to improve its reputation abroad.  "It's a branding issue really - we needed something that better reflects our move toward becoming a more socially caring nation," said Senator Wixup (D-NY).

The debate over what exactly to call the US continues though most seem to favor "American Socialist Republic" (American Socialist State was rejected, in part, because of objections to the acronym).

Republicans were less enthusiastic about the move, wanting to maintain the notion of our nation being a "republic".

"We can't just ignore our history.  This nation was built on the idea of free capital and republican ideals," said Senator Haymaker (R-WY).   "Just because those ideas have become outdated doesn't mean we should dismiss them outright."

Conservatives want something "Republican" sounding that keeps the flavor of the original name. Senator Wixup feels a compromise may be possible.  "United States Socialist Republic would seem to be a good choice.  And the acronym is currently available."
