View from the horse behind

I once lamented to a wise old mentor that I felt like I never lived up to my potential.  He admonished me to be patient. 

"In every race, there are two kinds of horses; the horses out front, and the horses behind."

I asked him which kind he thought I was. 

"Definitely a horse behind."
