Tax the rich?

When times get tough, poor and middle income  people slow their spending.  Only the rich continue shopping.  This is a bit of a cushion to prevent a recession from becoming a full-blown depression.  So what happens when you tax the rich?  You take away the cushion.  This recession has been tough.  If we begin laying more heavy taxes on the rich, the next one won't have such a gentle landing.
